Block Mode Study (Away-from-base)

In block-mode (away-from-base) courses, students attend 3 week-long sessions each semester (6 blocks per year) on campus at the Koori Centre, and the remainder of the course is completed independently at home.

Diploma in Education (Aboriginal)

Diploma in Education (Aboriginal) is a two-year course which offers students education skills training. Subjects in the Diploma include: Academic Literacies, Teaching and Learning, and Research Skills.

Bachelor of Education graduation, 2009

The Diploma in Education articulates directly into the Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Aboriginal Studies) i.e. the Diploma counts as the first two years of the Bachelor degree course.

The Diploma course DOES attract fees and HECS.

Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Aboriginal Studies)

Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Aboriginal Studies) is a four-year degree giving students a secondary teaching qualification, majoring in Aboriginal Studies and HSIE.

Entry into this course is by completion of the Diploma in Education (Aboriginal) or equivalent qualification.

The Bachelor course DOES attract fees and HECS.

Graduate Certificate/ Diploma/ Master of Indigenous Languages Education

These courses are for Indigenous educators who wish to develop their skills in Indigenous languages teaching.

The Graduate Certificate is a one-semester course and is open to applicants who have completed two years of teacher training or an equivalent course.

The Master of Indigenous Languages Education (MILE) is a one-year degree and is open to applicants who have a recognised teaching qualification such as a four-year degree, or a Bachelor degree and a Diploma of Education.

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate can undertake two extra units of study in the second semester and qualify for the Graduate Diploma or, if they achieve an average grade of 70%, can enter the Masters program in the second semester.


Please note that all of the above programs are only offered in block-mode.

Costs

Students who are eligible to receive Abstudy and meet distance from home requirements, have the cost of travel and accommodation covered by DEST. They also receive a daily meal allowance.

Other Block Mode Courses at The University of Sydney

The Sydney School of Public Health offers a one-year Graduate Diploma in Indigenous Health Promotion that gives you the skills to work in this interesting and important field. The course was developed in consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals and is based on national and international best practice in Indigenous health promotion.
