Scholarships
There are many scholarships, bursaries and cadetships available to Indigenous Australian students at the University of Sydney. These are administered by:

Conference Assistance for Indigenous Australian Students
The Koori Centre has a small budget to provide Indigenous Australian students, enrolled at the University, with financial assistance to attend conferences, workshops or seminars.
- Priority will be given to students who present a paper/poster/workshop etc.
- Conferences must relate directly to a student’s area of study.
- Funding assistance is limited to $2,000.
- All successful applicants will be required to submit a one-page written report to the Koori Centre on their return from the conference.
- To ensure a fair and equitable distribution of funds, a student will only be granted assistance once each year.
The aim of this assistance is to give students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and expertise in their chosen discipline.
International Exchange Scholarship
NB: For Commencement in 2010
The Koori Centre invites applications from Indigenous Australian Students who are undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate study from all Faculties across the University.
The Scholarship is valued at $5000 and applicants must be accepted into the International Exchange Program through the International Office of the University of Sydney.
Please note:
(i) Only one exchange is permissible during undergraduate and/or postgraduate study.
(ii) Application is for an exchange scholarship only. Students must work in collaboration with their Academic Supervisor and the International Office to arrange the exchange program.
2010 University of Sydney Indigenous Entry Scholarships
The University of Sydney Indigenous Entry Scholarships are awarded to students of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who have obtained an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) in the NSW Higher School Certificate (or equivalent) of 85.0 or above and who are commencing the first year of an undergraduate award course at The University of Sydney.
The Scholarship will be awarded to all students applying for admission to The University of Sydney through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) who fulfil the above criteria, subject to verification of eligibility.
A confirmed offer of a scholarship must be taken up by enrolment in the first year of the nominated degree or combined degree program in the year for which the offer is made. The Scholarship may be deferred for up to one year.
The value of Scholarships is $5,000 and will be paid in two equal instalments in late March and late August, subject to continued enrolment and maintaining satisfactory academic progress. The Scholarship is tenable for one year only.

University of Sydney Indigenous PhD Scholarships
Established in 2009, the objective of the University of Sydney Indigenous PhD Scholarships is to encourage and support talented Indigenous students to undertake research doctorate studies at the University.

Chancellor’s Committee Indigenous Australian Bursaries
The Chancellor’s Committee and the Koori Centre invites applications from Indigenous Australian students who are undertaking undergraduate study from all Faculties across the University of Sydney, for the following Bursaries
Chancellor's Committee Indigenous Australian Undergraduate Bursaries (HECS)
Undergraduate HECS Bursaries are only available to undergraduate students who have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of one year of full-time study in their current course. Three (3) of these, valued at $3,500, are offered annually.
Chancellor's Committee Indigenous Australian Undergraduate Bursaries – First Year
These Bursaries are only available to first year Undergraduate students. Up to 10 scholarships of $500 each are offered annually.
Chancellor's Committee Indigenous Australian Undergraduate Bursaries - Other Years
Up to five (5) encouragement awards of $500 each will be offered annually towards the cost of text books and study expenses. Available to students other than first year students.

Indigenous Australian Undergraduate Support Scholarship
The University of Sydney Indigenous Undergraduate Support Scholarship is awarded to students with demonstrated financial need.
Applicants will be ranked on the basis of eligibility and academic merit.
The Scholarships are valued at $2000 and to be eligible applicants must have completed any re-enrolment requirements by the second semester HECS census date on 31 July 2009. Students may be full-time, part-time or block-mode (scholarships will be awarded on a proportionate basis to part-time students).
Students should note that receiving this Scholarship may affect their Abstudy entitlement.

Indigenous Australian Postgraduate Scholarship
The Koori Centre invites applications from Indigenous Australian students who are undertaking postgraduate research and/or coursework study (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Masters and PhD Degree) from all Faculties across the University of Sydney. Awards are made on merit and/or financial need.
The Scholarships are valued at $2000 and to be eligible applicants must have completed any enrolment requirements for 2009. Students may be full-time, part-time or away-from-base (scholarships will be awarded on a proportionate basis to part-time students).

1st Year Undergraduate Laptop Scholarship
PLEASE NOTE: This scholarship is only available to students who are currently enrolled in their 1st year of an Undergraduate Degree/Course.
1st year Block Mode/Away from base students are eligible to apply.
The University of Sydney invites applications from Indigenous Australian students who are enrolled in their 1st year of an undergraduate course at The University of Sydney.
These scholarships have been established to assist students in gaining access to computer equipment. Previous recipients of this award are ineligible to apply.
Important Information for applicants:
- The laptop will remain the legal property of The University of Sydney for the duration of the warranty period, ownership will then transfer to the student.
- It is important to note that there are no maintenance agreements with the laptops, therefore all maintenance and upkeep outside of warranty will be the responsibility of the student, both during and after completing their studies.
- The University of Sydney will not be liable for any lost data or damage (including direct, indirect, consequential and incidental) to the laptop for any reason. Students are advised to seek their own property insurance. Should the laptop be lost, damaged, stolen or in any other way disposed of or rendered un-usable, it will not be replaced under this scheme.
- Students are reminded that use of the University laptop must not breach any law or the rights of any person. The University of Sydney will not be held liable for any misconduct by a user of a computer supplied under this scheme.
- Should a student withdraw or be excluded without completing their course, the student shall return the laptop. However, at the discretion of the University of Sydney, the student may be offered the opportunity to purchase the laptop at book value .
- Students should note that receiving this Scholarship may affect their Abstudy entitlement.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship
- Offered to students enrolled in a full-time degree or diploma course for fees, books, study equipment and living expenses. Amount varies according to need.
Alice Mary Wingrove Bursary
- This bursary is for Indigenous Australian students in any faculty and is valued at $300.
Grants from the Duncan Fund
- For students enrolled in the Diploma in Education (Aboriginal) and are valued at up to $100.
Grants from the AP Elkin Fund
- These are special purpose grants are for people of Aboriginal descent. The value varies according to need.
Poppy Harris Bursary
Established in 2005 the purpose of this bursary is to provide financial assistance to full-time undergraduate Indigenous Australian students who are enrolled in degree courses, making satisfactory progress, and who are in financial need. Value: up to $1000. In 2007 up to 3 awards may be made.
Robert Flloyd Marshall & Essen Marshall Scholarship
Established in 2005, the purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to full-time undergraduate Indigenous Australian students who are enrolled in degree courses, making satisfactory progress, and who are in financial need. Value: up to $2000. In 2007 up to 25 awards may be made.
Bernard Lee Scholarship for Indigenous Australian Students
This Scholarship was established in 2004 by a bequest from Mr Bernard Lee who died in 1997. To be considered for this award applicants must be an Indigenous Australian student aged less than 35 years, be enrolled in a degree course and making satisfactory progress. Value: $5000. In 2007 up to 11 award may be made.

Residential Scholarships
Residential Colleges and some faculties of the University offer a number of part or full Scholarships to Indigenous Australian Students to cover the cost of accommodation and meals on the Camperdown campus. Funds go directly towards these costs and sometimes a small weekly allowance may also paid to the student.

Faculty of Economics and Business
Faculty of Economics and Business and the University colleges: joint Australian Indigenous Scholarships
- Awarded annually to two students of Australian Indigenous background and based on academic merit and potential to perform well in an area of Economics and Business.
- The Scholarships are awarded toward accommodation at either Women's College or Wesley or may be taken as a grant valued at $6,000 per annum.
- Tenable for up to 4 years (Honours year inclusive).
Stephen Salsbury (St Andrews College Resident) Scholarship
- St Andrew's College provides numerous scholarships for its residents, which are generously supplied by the College, the St Andrew's College Foundation, and other generous donators such as Alumni and Friends.
- The Scholarship Committee meets early in the first semester of each academic year to award these to residents. Scholarships vary from year to year but generally range from $1,000 to $10,000.

Faculty of Law:
Indigenous Australian Law Student Accommodation Bursary
Applications are now open for the Law Society of New South Wales’ Indigenous Law Student Accommodation Bursary.
Available at the start of the 2008 academic year, the Bursary will contribute towards the cost of on-campus or University owned or operated accommodation for two academic years.
The Bursary is open to an Aboriginal Australian or Torres Strait Islander student who is currently undertaking a degree in law or who has been accepted to undertake such a degree at a University in NSW.

Victoria Gollan Scholarship
- $1,500 each year to assist an Indigenous Australian student in the study of Law.

- Commonwealth Indigenous Access Scholarships
Commencing Indigenous students who need help with educational costs.
$4,253 (half paid on receipt of acceptance form, half paid in April.)
Application Close: 16 October 2009
How to apply: Complete the online application through UAC Equity.
- Sydney Scholarships
$8,000 per year for five years maximum. Awarded to school leavers who achieved a UAI of 95 or above. These scholarships assist with study and living costs during undergraduate study in any faculty.
- Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (CECS)
$2,000 per year to assist with general education costs for full-time students who demonstrate financial hardship.
- Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS)
$4,000 per year to assist with accommodation costs for fulltime students who can demonstrate financial hardship, and who come from a rural/regional area and need to move to Sydney to undertake University study.
